Hasenhüttl excited by Walcott and Diallo arrivals
Saints manager Ralph Hasenhüttl was delighted to add a mixture of youth and experience to his squad after making moves for Ibrahima Diallo and Theo Walcott.
Diallo, a 21-year-old French midfielder, has signed a four-year contract from Ligue 1 side Brest, earning praise from the boss for his ability to read the game.
Walcott, 31, is one of Saints’ most successful Academy graduates, and returns to the club on a season-long loan from Everton almost 15 years since departing the south coast for Arsenal as a teenager.
Quartet depart on deadline day
Transfer deadline day saw four players depart St Mary’s, either on loan or permanent deals.
Sofiane Boufal has joined French top-flight side Angers, while Guido Carrillo has signed for Elche in Spain, both on free transfers.
Dutch defender Wesley Hoedt has returned to Lazio on a season-long loan deal with an option to buy, while youngster Christoph Klarer has completed a permanent transfer to German club Fortuna Düsseldorf.
Ings nets first England goal in style
Danny Ings celebrated his first start for England by scoring his first international goal with a spectacular overhead kick, as the Three Lions triumphed 3-0 against Wales at Wembley.
The Southampton striker played the full 90 minutes, starting the game on the right side of an England front three, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin occupying the centre-forward berth.
Saints’ No 9, wearing 10 for his country, improvised superbly to open his account with an acrobatic finish from six yards, joining Calvert-Lewin and Conor Coady on the scoresheet, as three players scored their first England goals on the same night for the first time since 1963.
International action continues
Three nights of international action remain this week, each involving Southampton players.
Ibrahima Diallo will hope to feature for France against Slovakia this evening in a qualifier for next year’s European Under-21 Championship, while Irish quartet Michael Obafemi, Will Smallbone, Will Ferry and Tom O’Connor could be involved against Italy Under-21s tomorrow.
Tuesday’s action also sees Moussa Djenepo’s Mali face Iran in a friendly, while Danny Ings, James Ward-Prowse and Jannik Vestergaard could face off when England host Denmark in the Nations League on Wednesday. Shane Long (Republic of Ireland) and Jan Bednarek (Poland) also have games on Wednesday.
Armstrong self-isolating after COVID-19 test
Southampton Football Club can confirm midfielder Stuart Armstrong has tested positive for COVID-19.
The midfielder returned a negative test for COVID-19 on arrival with the Scottish National Team on Monday but the supplementary UEFA test returned a positive result.
The 28-year-old is now self-isolating in line with government guidance, and the club is taking sensible precautions at Staplewood Campus whilst offering Stuart our full support.
Women see off Exeter
Southampton FC Women extended their unbeaten league run to four games following a comfortable 3-0 victory over Exeter City at the Snows Stadium on Sunday.
The opening goal came courtesy of a fine finish from Lucia Kendell, who slotted home calmly from close range following a superb run from Alisha Ware on 20 minutes.
A powerful run down the right and a driven cross from substitute Kelly Snook was deflected into the roof of her own net by Exeter’s Anthea Kaptien early in the second half, before Rachel Panting sealed the win late on.
