Monday Briefing: July 6th | Southampton FC

    Adams nets spectacular winner

Southampton recorded the club’s most impressive home win of the season to shock in-form Man City at St Mary’s, as Ché Adams scored the only goal of the game with his first in Saints colours.

Adams struck an audacious 39-yard lob in the 16th minute of the game, in the process scoring the furthest Premier League goal by any player this season.

Alex McCarthy excelled in goal for Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side, who produced a sterling defensive effort typified by a series of last-ditch blocks and tackles.

Away double-header next up for Saints

Having won three games out of four since the Premier League restart, Hasenhüttl now leads his team into back-to-back away games against Everton and Manchester United.

One week today, Old Trafford will be the destination as Saints face free-scoring Manchester United on Monday 13th July, kick-off 8pm BST live on Sky Sports.

    Final three fixtures confirmed

Following the Everton and United games, Saints’ final three Premier League fixtures have now been confirmed.

Brighton will visit St Mary’s on Thursday 16th July in an 8.15pm BST kick-off live on BT Sport, before Saints’ last away game of the season, at Bournemouth, on Sunday 19th July, kicking off at 2pm BST, also live on BT Sport.

Last chance to vote for Ings

Danny Ings has been recognised for his red-hot form since the restart with a nomination for June’s Premier League Player of the Month award.

The striker scored three goals in three games, taking his league tally to 18 for the season to keep in touch with the frontrunners for the Golden Boot prize.

Voting closes at 6pm BST and fans can show their support for Saints’ talisman on the link below.

    Tella signs contract extension

Young forward Nathan Tella has signed a three-year contract extension, keeping him at St Mary’s until 2023.

The talented 20-year-old joined Saints from Arsenal in 2017 and recently made his first-team debut in the 3-0 win at Norwich.

“It’s a great feeling to know the club have shown faith in me,” he said. “I want to do as well as I can and hopefully cement my place in the first team in the future.”

    Elyounoussi set for Celtic return

Mohamed Elyounoussi is set to rejoin Celtic on loan for the 2020/21 campaign.

The Norwegian international enjoyed a successful year at Parkhead before the Scottish Premiership season was cut short due to COVID-19, scoring seven goals in 20 appearances in all competitions.

Elsewhere, Josh Sims has returned to Staplewood following his latest loan spell with New York Red Bulls.

    Club awarded PL Advanced Standard

Southampton FC has been awarded the Premier League’s Equality Advanced Standard, becoming the first top-flight club to earn the accolade at the first time of trying.

The Premier League’s Equality Standards, introduced back in 2015, reflects current legislation and case law, providing a framework to guide professional football clubs towards achieving equality. It gives clubs the platform to make improvements internally and raise awareness externally.

To achieve the Advanced Standard, all clubs must undergo a rigorous assessment led by a panel of independent experts, with focus on demonstrating they’re committed to a cycle of continuous improvement with regards to equality throughout the organisation.

Sustainable Saints descend on Weston Beach

More than 30 members of Southampton FC staff completed the football club’s first ever beach clean, as part of a newly-formed Saints Sustainability initiative.

In conjunction with environmental group Final Straw Solent, staff cleared rubbish from a five-mile stretch of Weston Beach – just one of the many Saints green commitments, in order to make positive changes across the city for the community.

Observing social distancing measures at all times, staff were provided with gloves, buckets and litter pickers by Final Straw and spent two hours combing the coastline, collecting more than five large bin liners full of waste and debris that would otherwise pose a safety risk to both the public and wildlife.

    Summer soccer schools are back!

After months away from the football field, Southampton Football Club is delighted to confirm it will be running a summer Soccer School programme – just on a smaller scale and at less venues than we’re all used to.

Staff will be making sure everybody will be following all government and FA guidelines, distributing a COVID-19 guide to all participants so everyone can understand the steps being taken to ensure safety.

We expect our reduced soccer schools to sell out fast, so make sure you book quickly. Click here for more information and to find out how to sign up.
