Milner lifts the lid on how Klopp made players sick

James Milner reveals how Liverpool players struggled to adapt to Jurgen Klopp’s regime to the point some of them were physically sick.

When Jurgen Klopp arrived at Liverpool, the club his mandate was clear, to get the Merseysiders back to the top of English football.

Others had come before him and won other trophies but missed out on the league title and it ultimately cost them their jobs.

Klopp set about change from the very first training session, and such was the drastic difference in what he expected compared to that of predecessor Brendan Rodgers he actually made the players sick.

James Milner who was called on by Klopp to make a lot of changes to his game reveals how change was widespread and nobody was spared.

Speaking to Sky Sports Milner admits players were physically sick.

    He said:

“To see one of the young lads throwing up on the side of the training field in one of his first training sessions, that sets the tone, you know what you’re in for.”

“We had to adapt to that, there were a lot of injuries early on. People were saying, ‘You can’t do that!’”

“You could, you just had to get used to it. Straight away you saw the tempo and the intensity in that first game at Spurs.”

“It was ridiculous really, it wasn’t like we had played at a slow tempo under Brendan.”

“That journey started then with the manager’s methods and how he wanted us to play. You saw it come in bit by bit.”

“One week the quality would be there and the next week we would be miles off it.”

“That was a process again; the consistency started to come in and, eventually, learning how to win ugly and become a more rounded team.”

Klopp’s impact was clear for all in and around the club to see.
