Milan confirm Zlatan Ibrahimovic has signed new contract for next season

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has extended his stay at Milan by signing a new contract at the club.

The 39-year-old has excelled since returning to I Rossoneri in December 2019 – notching 25 goals in 35 Serie A outings – with his form at the start of the current campaign seeing Stefano Pioli’s side briefly mount an unlikely title challenge.

A number of injuries have seen the frontman sidelined for large spells throughout the campaign, though that hasn’t stopped him repeatedly confessing his desire to continue in the game.

Milan have now offered him that chance, with Ibrahimovic penning a new contract at the Serie A giants which will see him playing in Italy’s top tier until he’s at least 40 years of age.

The Serie A giants confirmed on their official website that the Swedish frontman would remain at the club for next season and they took time to highlight his superb goal record over two spells with I Rossoneri.

“Milan has announced that the club has extended Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s contract,” the statement read.

“Milan is the club for which Zlatan has played the most in Italy. After scoring 84 goals in 130 appearances with the Rossoneri, the Swedish striker will continue to be wearing the red and black jersey next season.”

The former Manchester United man came out of international retirement with Sweden earlier this year and now looks likely to represent his country at Euro 2020.

For now he’ll be fully concentrated on Milan’s league campaign, with a place in next season’s Champions League far from secure.

Pioli’s side hold a six-point cushion over fifth place Napoli though Gennaro Gattuso’s men do hold a game in hand. Milan head to Lazio on Monday – another side in the hunt for Champions League football – in what could prove to be a crucial round of matches in the hunt for a top four spot.
