Michael Carrick preparing ‘big changes’ for Manchester United’s starting line-up vs Villarreal with fringe player expected to start

    Villarreal vs Manchester United

Manchester United’s first game of the post-Ole Gunnar Solskjaer era takes place later this evening.

The Red Devils face a trip to Spain for a clash with Villarreal in the Champions League.

Man United head into the game sat top of their group due to them having scored more goals than 2nd place Villarreal who have the same points total as United (7).

However, with Atalanta currently 3rd on five points, Manchester United could actually drop as low as 3rd on Tuesday should they lose to Unai Emery’s side and Atalanta see off Young Boys.

Therefore, a win is almost a must for caretaker manager, Michael Carrick.

Carrick to ring in the changes?

Now, ahead of his first game in charge of Manchester United, it is being reported that Carrick is set to make big changes.

As per the reliable Fabrizio Romano, the former United midfielder is preparing some big changes for the starting line-up against Villarreal, with fringe midfielder Donny van de Beek expected to start:

Given the importance of this tie, it seems a brave move for Carrick to tinker too much, but it will be interesting to see what he comes up with once the official line-up is released an hour before kick-off.

Who do you think should start against Unai Emery’s side?
