Lionel Messi went a step further than his nemesis Cristiano Ronaldo, leading Barcelona to victory, and the Champions League quarter-finals.
Barcelona made easy work of Napoli in the end, after fears that the Catalonians were not in good form.
Lionel Messi and his side limped to the end of the La Liga season. Their poor form saw Real Madrid pip them to the league title.
It appears that while Napoli was not the stiffest opposition they could have faced, Quique Setien’s side played well and got a deserved victory.
It was a night shrouded in controversy as VAR was at the heart of several decisions that will have left a bitter taste at times on both sides.
However, it was Lenglet who got the home side off the ground, with a goal in the 10th minute.
Only 13 minutes later Messi doubled the lead. The Argentine lived up to his nickname the “Atomic Flee.” Napoli just could not squash him as hard as they tried and the diminutive Argentine powered the ball home while being dragged to the ground.
Luis Suarez scored from the penalty spot in the first minute of injury time to make it three.
But there was still time for Gennaro Gattuso’s side to pull one back before the break. The Italian side had a penalty of their own in the fifth minute of first-half injury time.
The game was all but over by the break, and the tie played out, leaving Barcelona heading to the quarter-finals.
Check out the action!
All the talk now will be how Messi did what Ronaldo could not, and carried his team to the next round.
There they will face one of the tournament favorites Bayern Munich, who thrashed Chelsea.
