‘Manchester United should be ‘worried’ about David de Gea’

Jamie Carragher believes Manchester United should be ‘worried’ about the form of David de Gea. He also suggested the club may need to replace the Spaniard.

De Gea has seen a shaky season for Manchester United and Jamie Carragher believes the club should now consider moving on from the goalkeeper.

The Spaniard has made 399 appearances for the Red Devils since signing from Atletico Madrid in 2011. In that period, he has won United’s Player of the Season award three times.

However, De Gea has made a number of high-profile mistakes over the past 18-months. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently jumped in defence of his goalie and called him the best in the world.

But Carragher says the 29-year-old’s indifferent form can no longer be considered just a ‘blip’.

He wrote in a column for Telegraph Sport: “The players who elevated Liverpool from being a side chasing the top four into European and Premier League champions are Virgil van Dijk and Alisson.”

“They take Jurgen Klopp’s side to a level beyond Manchester United, certainly defensively.”

“United have to worry about their keeper. David De Gea has seen his poor form go on for too long for it to be described as a blip. I do not believe he will get back to the level he was three or four years ago. Given he is a high earner he will not be easy to move on.”

Dean Henderson has impressed on loan at Sheffield United and many already believe he can go on to replace De Gea as United’s no 1 shot-stooper. Carragher doesn’t seem to agree with the latter.

“While there are those suggesting on-loan Dean Henderson is ready to step up, he is not ready,”

Carragher added. “With respect to Sheffield United, there is a different pressure at Old Trafford. “Some of the goals Henderson has conceded would have been scrutinized more if he was at Manchester United.”

Contrary to what the majority think, perhaps the presence of Henderson could actually inspire De Gea back to his best.
