Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer drops big hint of a Chris Smalling return following AS Roma loan

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer drops big hint of Chris Smalling return following AS Roma loan, according to the Independent

Smalling’s career at United has certainly been up and down, since his arrival from Fulham a decade ago back in 2010.

Now at 30-years of age, the international defender seems to be at a crossroads in his career, despite a very productive loan spell at AS Roma.

The ex-England man performed very well in Serie A, which has prompted Solskjaer to recall the defender and speak positively about Smalling returning to the club.

Solskjaer has many defenders in his squad.

He said:  “I think Chris has shown over his Man United career how valuable he is to Man United,” Solskjaer said. “This season was about him being a regular and showing how good a centre-back he is.

“I wanted to give Harry, Vic and Axel a chance, so we found that was best for him, to go to Roma and play for a year.

“Now he’s coming back and he’s shown this season he’ll be valuable. I’ve been speaking to Chris throughout and I’ve been delighted with his season.”

Despite the positive words, most United fans will know that their squad is full of centre backs and there is probably room to sell one or two with the likes of Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling, Harry Maguire, Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof and Axel Tuanzebe.
