Manchester United ‘Lodge €55m Bid’ for Federico Chiesa

Manchester United have moved ahead of fellow interested parties in making a bid for Fiorentina’s Federico Chiesa, claims one report from Italy.

It’s been another fruitful individual campaign for the forward, who registered ten goals across all competitions for the second season running; his nine league assists were also a club high. In other words, he’s pretty good.

So good in fact that he’s being tracked by Serie A big hitters Juventus and Inter, speculation that has been prevalent pretty much continuously since he burst onto the scene on the opening day of the 2016/17 campaign.

Despite all that, Italian publication La Nazione has claimed that United are moving ahead of the pack, so much so that they’ve lodged a bid worth €55m for the 22-year-old.

It’s no secret that the Red Devils are eyeing up reinforcements in the current transfer window, with a pursuit of Jadon Sancho – as revealed by 90min back nearly a year ago – having been ongoing for quite some time. Recent talk has potentially thrown a spanner in that move, with some suggestions being that United will refuse to be held ransom over the fee and wage demands, therefore they may look elsewhere this summer.

That said, it brings back memories of their tracking of Harry Maguire, a player who, despite all the rumours of talks breaking down, still moved to Old Trafford. It was simply a case of haggling until the last minute.

Due to such reports, the most likely outcome is that given United ‘may look elsewhere’, a swathe of players’ names will appear linked with United between now and whenever the Sancho deal gets done – no matter whether these stories have any legs or not.

Chiesa is a superb talent, and while he fits the age bracket that Untied are after, their preference has always been towards British players, something Ole Gunner Solskjaer has stated in the past. Sancho remains the priority.
