Manchester City star edges closer to move to Catalan giants | Shoot

Manchester City’s hopes of securing an unprecedented quadruple this season were ended on Saturday as Pep Guardiola’s side crashed out of the FA Cup after a 1-0 semi final defeat to Chelsea.

The result put an end to City fans’ hopes of achieving the remarkable feat, but does mean that they can turn the attention solely to the EFL Cup, where they face Tottenham on Sunday, and the Champions League, with the Premier League title all but secured with eight games remaining.

The Citizens face Paris Saint0-Germain in the semi finals of Europe’s premier club competition, with the prospect of facing either Real Madrid or Chelsea in the final awaiting the winners of the two-leg tie.

One player in particular who will be hoping that City can win a first Champions League is the departing Sergio Aguero, who will leave the Etihad this summer as the club’s record goalscorer.

The news that Aguero was to depart Manchester has fuelled a flurry of speculation surrounding his future, with a number of clubs both domestically and abroad all linked with potential moves for the prolific goalscorer.

However, it appears that the Argentine’s future could now be sorted as TyC Sports are reporting that the 32-year-old is on the verge of joining Spanish giants Barcelona.

Aguero could join international teammate Lionel Messi in Barcelona next term

The La Liga side have failed to replace Luis Suarez, who departed for rivals Atletico Madrid last summer, and have now identified Aguero as the perfect candidate to replace the Uruguayan.

The prospect of signing the player on a free transfer also appeals to the Catalan side, whose financial struggles have been widely documented in recent months.

Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal were all linked with the player, but it appears that his next destination has now been all but decided.

Aguero is known to be close personal friends with Barca talisman Lionel Messi, who himself faces an uncertain future, but the possibility of playing with Aguero could encourage the six time Ballon d’or winner to stay put at the Nou Camp.

The South American has faced an injury plagued season so far and has scored just one league goal this campaign, but will hope to bow out on a high with the prospect of a treble still very achievable.
