Man Utd: Ten Hag ‘very happy’ to have Ronaldo in his squad

The Red Devils striker asked the club to allow his departure earlier this summer.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has shrugged off rumours about his problems with Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Dutch manager criticized Ronaldo and other members of the Man Utd squad who left Old Trafford early during a friendly against Rayo Vallecano last week.

Speaking ahead of his side’s Premier League opener against Brighton, Ten Hag reminded the reporters that his comments were not exclusively directed at the Portuguese star.

He said: “Many players left [the stadium]. But the spotlight is on Cristiano. That is not right, so do your research and make out many players left. That was what I said.

“He was part of it. There were a lot of players. I am really happy, I told you before, we have a top striker.

“I am really happy he’s here with the squad and we stick to the plan.

“I’m satisfied with the whole team, we’re working good, good culture and Cristiano is working really tough and hard.”

    ‘It’s about the right players’

Ten Hag also spoke about Man Utd’s interest in signing Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona.

According to several English sources, the Red Devils have an agreement with Barcelona for the Dutchman’s transfer. However, De Jong himself is reportedly insisting on staying at Camp Nou.

“We want Frenkie?” he added. “It’s about the right players and I cannot give comments on a player under contract at another club.

“You work with the current squad and develop players in your current squad. In this moment we have players in that position and perform really well.”
