Man Utd need a striker like Haaland, says former coach

    Date published: Friday 16th October 2020 5:22

Former Man Utd coach Rene Meulensteen has urged the club to sign a ‘proper’ forward like Erling Braut Haaland.

It was an up-and-down transfer window for Manchester United. Despite chasing him all summer, they failed to secure the signing of Jadon Sancho.

They had only signed Donny Van De Beek leading up the final day of the window. But the Red Devils made four signings on deadline day, which included Alex Telles and Edinson Cavani.

Cavani joins the club with a great scoring record for both Napoli and PSG. During his time in France, the forward scored 200 goals from 301 appearances in all competitions.

But he is now 33-years-old, and he left the Ligue 1 side on a free in the summer as his contract expired. Man Utd had been heavily linked with a move for Haaland before he joined Dortmund in January 2020.

It was believed that they had agreed on a deal to sign the forward from RB Saltzburg. But the deal fell through, and he joined the German side for around £20m.

Since then, he has further established himself as one of the best strikers in the world. Haaland has scored 21 goals from just 23 games in all competitions so far for Dortmund.

Man Utd’s former first-team coach Rene Meulensteen has suggested that Haaland is the striker the club should be going for. In his column for Manchester United Supporters Club in Scandinavia, he said: “United need a real striker, a proper No 9, one like Erling Haaland.”

“Just look at Bayern Munich about how important a striker is for them. Ask Tottenham or Leicester what a striker means. For me, it is strange that a striker has not been the main goal for United.

“Marcus Rashford can play striker, but he is not a typical striker. Anthony Martial can provide goals, but he is no goal scorer.

“Now Edinson Cavani has signed but I don’t think Manchester United should look for a 33-year-old on the last day of the transfer window.

“Cavani has an impressive scoring record but he knows nothing about the Premier League.

“I really hope he adapts fast and gets started. It’s hard to understand how United end up in the position that they have to hurry around for players on deadline day.”
