Man United could appoint Championship boss to succeed Ten Hag | Shoot

Manchester United travel to London to face rivals Chelsea on Thursday evening.

The Red Devils drew 1-1 against Brentford last time out, despite going ahead in the sixth minute of added time through Mason Mount’s goal.

The Bees had dominated the match but looked set to lose the game following Mount’s goal, until defender Kristoffer Ajer drew the hosts level in West London.

Erik ten Hag’s side now return to the capital for a crucial game in the race to finish in the top four, with United’s chances of doing so currently hanging by a thread.

In the meantime, a shock contender has emerged to succeed Ten Hag as United boss.

According to Football Insider, those in charge of the club are huge admirers of Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna.

McKenna is striving to achieve back-to-back promotions with Ipswich

The Northern Irishman left his coaching role at Old Trafford to take charge of the Tractor Boys in 2021, and has since enjoyed huge success in Suffolk.

McKenna, 37, guided Ipswich to promotion from League One to the Championship during his first full season in charge at Portman Road, and the Suffolk side currently sit top of the second tier.

Last time out, Ipswich defeated fellow high-flyer Southampton 3-2 at Portman Road, courtesy of a 97th minute winner from Brighton and Hove Albion loanee Jeremy Sarmiento.

The report claims that United have a ‘concrete’ interest in the manager, who has emerged as a strong contender to take over at the club if Ten Hag does leave.

The Dutchman’s future has been the subject of significant speculation since the recent arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS at the club.

McKenna, who also worked as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s assistant at Old Trafford, is contracted to Ipswich until the end of the 2026/27 season.
