Man United boss Solskjaer provides Harry Maguire injury update

Man United boss Solskjaer provides concerning Harry Maguire injury update

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has spoken out over the injury picked up by Harry Maguire during Manchester United’s meeting with Aston Villa this afternoon.

    Cavani rounds out the scoring

Solskjaer and co. were of course back in action earlier on Sunday.

The Red Devils made the trip to Aston Villa, aiming to get a hectic spell of three Premier League fixtures in the space of five days off to a positive start.

And, when all was said and done at Villa Park, this is precisely what United managed.

Dean Smith’s hosts actually took the lead in the clash, when Bertrand Traore rifled a wonderful effort into the top corner of Dean Henderson’e net midway through the first-half:

United, though, quickly establishing themselves as the masters of the comeback, turned the clash on its head shortly after the interval.

First, Bruno Fernandes levelled things up from the penalty spot, before Mason Greenwood made it 2-1 with a pinpoint left-footed effort into Emi Martinez’s near post:

And there was even time for substitute Edinson Cavani to get in on the act, courtesy of a trademark late header.

Manchester United now sit a full six points clear of 3rd-placed Chelsea, on the back of their 20th win of the Premier League season.

    ‘Need to check it…’

As outlined above, however, one concern on an otherwise positive afternoon for the Reds was forthcoming on the personnel front.

A little over ten minutes from time, Edinson Cavani felled Anwar El Ghazi deep in the visitors’ half.

The Villa star, in turn, was sent tumbling, and landed awkwardly on the planted leg of United captain Harry Maguire.

The English international could immediately be seen to be in considerable pain, with Maguire, despite repeated efforts to continue, having eventually been forced to hobble off.

Speaking during his post-match interview, it therefore came as little surprise when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was drawn on the wellbeing of his key defender.

The Norwegian’s update, though, proved altogether concerning, with Solskjaer having admitted that he remains unaware of the extent of Maguire’s issue, with ‘a month’ on the sidelines seemingly not out of the question:

‘Hopefully that [an appearance in the Europa League final] will be okay with Harry.’

‘I don’t know. We need to check it. It might be a few weeks or a month – we don’t know.’

‘It was his calf or lower leg. I think the player landed on him and he twisted something.’
