Man City thump Arsenal on Premier League return

The master outclassed the apprentice as Manchester City marked their Premier League return with a comfortable 3-0 victory against Arsenal.

Manchester City welcomed Arsenal in their 29th Premier League matchday, a fixture that was originally scheduled to take place on March 11 but was pushed back due to the outbreak of coronavirus.

Arsenal were dealt with a severe blow when Granit Xhaka had to be taken off in the very early moments of the match after suffering a knock. Pablo Mari encountering a similar fate shortly after further intensified the visitors’ worries.

But neither of the misfortunes probably caused Mikel Arteta as much distress as did David Luiz.

A catalog of errors from the Brazilian defender led directly to two of Man City’s goals. Luiz’s failure to clear the ball allowed Raheem Sterling to open the scoring while him manhandling Riyad Mahrez inside the box resulted in City being awarded a penalty that Kevin De Bruyne cooly converted.

Substitute Phil Foden then added a third late in the game to round off a dominant 3-0 victory for his side.

The defeat could have easily been a much heavier one for Arsenal as Man City, while performed well considering the long lay-off, lacked their usual sharpness.

Any more slip-ups can prove to be very costly for the Gunners who currently sit on the ninth and aspire to play European football the next season.

Meanwhile, up next for the Sky Blues, who have further strengthened their top-four chances with tonight’s win, are Burnley on Monday.
