Liverpool denied by Everton in a nil-nil derby draw

Liverpool got just one of the six points they need to capture the Premier League title as a resolute Everton hold on for a goalless draw.

The 236th Merseyside derby like all the other Premier League games opened with a tribute.

Before tonight’s game, Liverpool needed two wins to secure their first league title in 30 years.

After Everton put on a great defensive display at Goodison Park, Jurgen Klopp’s side still needs five points from the remaining eight games.

The statistics show that Liverpool possessed the ball as if they were the home side.

But Carlo Ancelotti’s side was well organized and disciplined in their efforts to make sure they did their cross Stanley Park neighbors no favors.

Everton’s Italian boss granted what he described as a deserving start to 19-year-old Anthony Gordon.

Telling  Sky Sports, before the game:

“Anthony Gordon trained well, showed confidence and this is a good opportunity for him. He deserves to play.”

Jurgen Klopp surprised everyone by dropping Mo Salah to the bench and not even including Andy Robertson in his squad.

There was some bad news for Klopp on the injury front, as James Milner had to be replaced in the 43rd minute because of injury.

The game was an open affair, with opportunities for both sides from start to finish.

Both teams going for all three points up until the last minute.

Tom Davies hotting the woodwork late on for Everton.

Then with just about the last touch of the game being a Jordan Pickford making a fingertip save, pushing Fabinho’s free-kick over the bar.

It ended honors even at Goodison.

If City drop points, Liverpool can still win the title on Wednesday night at Anfield against Crystal Palace. For now, the wait goes on for Liverpool fans.
