Lampard confirms Chelsea planning exciting end to transfer drought

Frank Lampard has confirmed that Chelsea plan to bring in “a few” key additions in the upcoming transfer window, to end the recent drought of arrivals into the club.

The Blues were handed a transfer ban for two windows last February, meaning their only major summer business last summer was to take up the option to buy Mateo Kovacic in the midfielder’s loan deal.

While the Court of Arbitration for Sport halved the ban in December – allowing Chelsea to spend in January – no new arrivals were brought in, although an agreement was struck with Ajax to sign Hakim Ziyech at the end of the season.

Blues boss Lampard was keen to sign support up top for Tammy Abraham in the winter window and looked visibly frustrated late on in the month when no new business was done.

Speaking to Chelsea’s official magazine, however, Lampard confirmed that he is planning to end that drought with new signings when the window re-opens.

“I’m certainly excited about the squad we’ve got, with the young players and if we can get a few additions for areas I feel we need,” the manager said.

“We didn’t bring in anyone in January, it didn’t work out to be right for us at the time, and last summer we couldn’t bring anyone in, so those windows are gone and we haven’t changed.

“So I am excited about the squad we’ve got, if we can freshen up in the right areas we all know that.”

Left-back appears to be a key area for Chelsea, with the club linked with Porto’s Alex Telles and Leicester’s Ben Chilwell, while the Blues have also been linked with Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz.

While Chelsea were unable to agree new deals last summer, Lampard brought back Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori from loans at Derby, while Abraham and Christian Pulisic came back from spells with Aston Villa and Borussia Dortmund, respectively.

As such, the Blues have still managed to stake a claim for a top-four spot this term, with Mount and Abraham particularly impressive for the West London club.

Chelsea sat fourth – five points ahead of fifth-placed Manchester United – before the Premier League’s enforced break.

The top flight is set to resume on June 17 after elite sport was given the green light to resume by the UK government.

In other news, Juventus have reportedly offered Chelsea the pick of three players as they hunt a deal for Jorginho.
