Juventus have announced the signing of Schalke midfielder Weston McKennie on an initial season-long loan with an option to buy at the end of the campaign.

I Bianconeri will pay €4.5m for the temporary signing of the player, before stumping up a further €18m, should they decide to make his stay permanent in Turin.

The central midfielder flew to Italy for his medical earlier this week, and the Serie A giants confirmed his arrival at the club online on Saturday evening, as he becomes the first American to ever pull on the black and white stripes of Juventus.

McKennie began his career at FC Dallas before moving to Schalke in 2016. He has grown to be such a prominent figure in the United States National Team, that he was handed the captain’s armband at the tender age of 20, and he has already made 19 appearances in the Stars and Stripes.

The USMNT international is also quite versatile, being able to perform seamlessly as a box-to-box central midfielder, or protect the defence at the base of the midfield. His energetic and determined displays led to him recovering the ball 175 times last season – more than any other player in the Schalke side.

Coach Andrea Pirlo will be delighted to have captured the youngster’s signature, as he looks to freshen up this Old Lady side ahead of the upcoming campaign. Juve have already shipped out Blaise Matuidi and Miralem Pjanic this summer, while Sami Khedira’s future at the club is far from certain.

Aaron Ramsey is also being linked with a move away from Turin in a possible swap deal involving Everton and Moise Kean, so the rookie coach is having to rebuild the heart of his team. McKennie joins Arthur Melo as a new face in the Bianconeri midfield, and they are far from finished in their recruitment for next season.
