Jose Mourinho wants Wolves’ Matt Doherty at Spurs

Not much has been heard about Jose Mourinho’s plans at Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the 2020/21 Premier League season. However, a report by Sky Sports has claimed that the Portuguese manager is interested in signing Wolves right-back Matt Doherty this summer.

Spurs have needed a replacement for Kieran Trippier after he left to join La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid more than a year ago. It can also be recalled that Kyle Walker-Peters was sold to Southampton while the club are presently in talks with AC Milan over a potential move to the San Siro for Serge Aurier.

Therefore, wisdom demands that they get a decent right-back to fill the void that has been left in the team.

Doherty, 28, has established himself as one of the key men at Wolves since their return to the Premier League two years ago under the management of Nuno Espirito Santo. He has also proven himself to be a good goalscorer from the right-back position.

Wolves value Doherty at £12m and Mourinho is keen for Spurs to make a move although talks have not yet started between the two clubs. The North Londoners have already signed the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and former Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart on a free transfer this summer.

It must be known that in the last two Premier League seasons, only Liverpool fullbacks Trent Alexander Arnold with combined goals and assists ratio of 30 and Andrew Robertson with 25 have gotten higher numbers than Matt Doherty who is on 16.

The right-back will be a good addition to Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the 2020/21 season and should provide some attacking threat from the flanks for the Jose Mourinho side.

They will be looking to launch an assault next season for a return to the UEFA Champions League which they missed out on after finishing outside the top 4 last season. They finished sixth on the log in the last campaign.
