Jose Mourinho confirms Tottenham want to offer defender new contract –

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Eric Dier wants to stay at Tottenham – and Chairman Daniel Levy has urged the defender to sign a new contract.

The 26-year-old, who has one-year left on the long-term deal he signed in September 2016, has scored 11 goals in 237 appearances since joining Spurs from Sporting Lisbon in 2014.

Dier, who was admired by Mourinho during his days as Manchester United boss, has become a key man for Tottenham since the restart, impressing against United and then in last Tuesday’s 2-0 victory over West Ham.

Initially, Dier’s poor form prior to Christmas – which made a summer exit extremely likely – saw him dropped and not feature in the Premier League for more than a month.

However, before the suspension of English football for COVID-19, his fortunes took a turn for the better and has flourished ever since slipping back into the defence.

He has played every minutes of Spurs’ previous four Premier League outings, and despite conceding the penalty which led to United’s equaliser last month, has been superb next to Davinson Sanchez – and therefore, the Portuguese wants his contract situation sorted out.

Mourinho told Football.London: “My boss Mr Levy tells me that he wants Eric to sign a new contract and Eric tells me he is more than happy here, happy with his situation, especially now we have a certain idea for him and the team.

“He wants very much to stay.”
