Joe Cole jinxes Romelu Lukaku in Golden Boot race against Cristiano Ronaldo – Talk Chelsea

Joe Cole is a True Blue – there’s no doubting that. Despite being an East End boy and a West Ham academy product, he’s never hidden his allegiance to the Chels, even when working as a pundit on TV.

So in an interview where he doesn’t even have to try and be neutral, of course he’s going to lean heavily in favour of Chelsea.

Unfortunately, when doing an interview with Yung Filly at a Hotels.com event, he seems to have jinxed his old team.

Asked on Wednesday night – ahead of the Malmo game – who would be top scorer in the Premier League this season, he narrowed it down to two options, Cristiano Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku.

“I think it could be either of them,” Cole mused.

“I think they will be the number one and number two. I think Harry Kane, the fact he hasn’t got off the mark yet in the league, I can’t see him clawing
    himself back into the charts.

“Out of them two I think it’ll be the one who doesn’t pick up an injury. I think they will consistently score goals throughout, and they’ll be neck and neck.”

Of course, we all know what happened next. The Blues went out to play their group game against Malmo, and before the first half was even over, they had lost Lukaku to injury.

The forward’s ankle got a nasty turn inside out, with a Malmo defender’s full weight coming down on it. Lukaku was down for some time, and when he was substituted there was major fears it could be serious.

You just had to go and open your big mouth, didn’t you Joe!

Thankfully the updates we’ve had since have indicated that it’s not too severe, and he should miss just a few Premier League games. Unfortunately, when you’re competing with Cristiano Ronaldo for a golden boot, those games are likely to prove fatal to your chances.

Still, there is plenty of hope. As long as Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer’s clown show continues at Old Trafford, Lukaku has a chance to get firing and beat the Portuguese superstar to the award. Hopefully the rest of the team will have found some rhythm and some attacking form in the Belgian’s absence, and a break from playing might actually help him recover mentally from some of the fatigue that his manager Thomas Tuchel said he thinks his forward has been suffering from since the Euros in the summer.

Assuming Joe doesn’t jinx him again later in the season, that is…
