Jesse Marsch, former New York Red Bulls boss, wins Austrian Bundesliga coach of the year

Former New York Red Bulls manager Jesse Marsch has been named the Austrian Bundesliga coach of the year for the 2019-2020 season after guiding Red Bull Salzburg to a domestic double and becoming the first American coach to win a single or multiple European trophies.

Marsch’s charges steamrolled down the stretch, taking 26 out of 30 possible points from the 10-match championship round to finish 12 points clear in the standings. That followed a 5-0 demolition of second division Austria Lustenau in late May in the Cup final, the club’s first game back in action following a break of two-and-a-half months due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Before the break, Salzburg finished third in a difficult UEFA Champions League group that included Liverpool and Napoli, and earned a parachute place in the Europa League’s round of 32, where thely lost 6-3 on aggregate to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Marsch was in his first season in charge in Salzburg, after spending a year as an assistant at the parent club of the Red Bull football family, RB Leipzig in Germany’s Bundesliga.
