Just how has Harry Maguire’s first year at Manchester United been since he signed from Leicester City for a world record transfer fee for a defender?
On this day in 2019, Manchester United finally landed the new center back they were so desperate to add to their ranks.
The fee the Red Devils had to stump up was a world record for a defender, surpassing the amount Liverpool paid for Virgil Van Dijk.
So after forking out €87M what have United got in return?
Maguire actually played more minutes than any other outfield United player over the course of the season. He also became the first player since Gary Pallister back in 1994/95 to play every minute of every league game in a season.
While there has been much criticism of the England center back after some noticeable mistakes, he has certainly improved Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s defense.
Such has been Maguire’s impact both on and off the field, he was awarded the captain’s armband at the club just six months after his arrival.
Perhaps most importantly was the results that were influenced by Maguire’s arrival. United has gone from sixth in the league to third.
With the minimization of defensive errors playing a huge role. Last season saw them concede 54 goals, one of the worst in the league. While this year, they only saw 36 goals against, bettered only by Liverpool and Manchester City.
