Henderson issues Liverpool apology for reaction to Suarez, Evra incident

Jordan Henderson has issued an apology on behalf of Liverpool for wearing t-shirts in support of Luis Suarez after the Uruguayan racially abused Patrice Evra nine years ago.

Suarez received an eight-match ban in 2011 for using racist abuse towards Manchester United defender Evra. The Frenchman alleged that Suarez had repeated a racist term at him “at least 10 times”.

However, Liverpool responded by wearing t-shirts with Suarez’s picture on in the warm-up the day after the ban was announced.

At the time, the striker maintained his innocence. However, he was in the wrong, and Liverpool eventually apologised to Evra by sending him a letter.

Now, Liverpool captain Henderson – the only member of that squad still at the club – has admitted that the club did not handle the situation correctly.

“I was a young player at the time,” he is quoted as saying by the Mirror. “It was something I had never experienced before.

“Looking back at it now I am not sure the club dealt with it in the best way. We thought about Luis but we didn’t think about protecting Patrice.

“If people want to point me out then I’ll take that. People will say it’s a bit late but better late than never.”

    Henderson latest to apologise

Henderson, 30, is currently recovering from an injury he suffered during the last international break.

He has followed Jamie Carragher in apologising for the response to the Suarez incident, after the former Liverpool defender did so last year.

Carragher’s admission while working as a pundit alongside Evra led to the letter that Liverpool sent to confirm their regret for the incident.
