Hasenhüttl: We must do more

Ralph Hasenhüttl is demanding more from his side, as Southampton prepare to head to relegation threatened Watford on Sunday.

The Hornets sit just one point above the drop zone and will come into Sunday’s meeting off the back of defeat to Burnley, while Saints will be looking to recover from a 2-0 loss at the hands of Arsenal.

Having won the reverse fixture back in November thanks to strikes from Danny Ings and James Ward-Prowse, Southampton will be looking to record the double over their opponents.

“This is a completely new team with a new manager now, so it doesn’t have anything to do with the old game,” said Hasenhüttl, in reference to the St Mary’s meeting between the two sides.

“The last game we played against them was an important one for sure, but in the end we are speaking about a new game.

“Now in this time of the season you will face teams that are playing for everything, either Champions League qualification or to avoid relegation.

“We are also not 100% safe and we need points, so if you go there and think you can just play football then you are wrong, you must take the fight there and if you don’t, you have no chance.

“We must invest more, sprint more and play better than we did against Arsenal. They have a few good players in transition after winning balls and have quick counter-attacks, so this is what makes them so dangerous at times.”

Preparing for a third match in just nine days, the Saints boss also confirmed he would be making changes to his starting eleven.

“We always knew this was going to be a very intense time, but we have enough players. We need everybody, and it’s a chance for other players to show up and now we will definitely have a few changes at the weekend.

“Everybody will get game time hopefully in the final games. We will have to change a few guys when they’re not fresh enough in these final games, so if we have to change it we will change it.”
