Five talking points from Matchday 1 of 2020/21 Premier League

The 2020/21 Premier League season excitingly began last weekend with goals pouring in, points garnered, upsets suspended, new buys debuting, and the newly promoted clubs given a tip of what to expect this season.

There were various talking points from various match centers but these were the ones that caught our eyes and are worth discussing.

These are our talking points from the 2020/21 Premier League Matchday 1 fixtures:

Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds already look the best amongst the newly promoted sides

All the newly promoted sides were in action on Matchday 1 and they all lost. Two of the three lost scandalously at home without scoring a goal whilst one covered themselves in glory and showed that they will be a hard nut to crack this season with their performance although they lost.

It’s still early days and we know, but Fulham and West Brom didn’t cover themselves in glory on matchday 1. They both played at home against Leicester City and Arsenal respectively and lost by 3 goal margins.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men, on the other hand, took the game to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool at Anfield as the Reds survived a scare. The Reds had to rely on a penalty in the closing stages of the game to steal all three points and start off their title defense positively. It must also be recalled that they were awarded two penalties on the day.

Nevertheless, Leeds United put up the best performance of newly promoted teams for the season on Matchday 1. We look forward to how they fare in their next Premier League game, alongside the others.

Mohammed Salah hit the first hat-trick of the season

Liverpool striker Mohammed Salah was arguably the star player of matchday 1 as he hit the first hat-trick of the season although two of his goals were from the penalty spot and against a newly promoted side. This was also the case for Leicester’s Jamie Vardy who scored a brace from the spot against new boys West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns.

The Egyptian was up for the game, and what an enthralling game of football it was. The race for the golden boot has begun and his next stop will be against Frank Lampard’s Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Will Sheffield United be consistent this season?

Chris Wilder’s men were the surprise of last season in my opinion after finishing in the top half of the table and missed out of European football by a whisker. Their form and momentum seemingly dropped towards the end of last season.

They opened this campaign with a two-nil loss at home to Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves and it remains to be seen if this result was a one-off or if their playing style has been found out, with a season-long struggle on the cards. We wait to see how things turn out for them.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal seem to be on song

    mikel arteta arsenal

Arsenal beat Fulham 3 nil away from home with their new signings Gabriel Magalhaes and Willian impressing on the day. The Brazilian defender was on the scoresheet on his debut whilst former Chelsea midfielder Willian was incisive enough and provided two assists.

Consistency and low numbers in attack saw the Brazilian attacker receive criticisms at Chelsea. Regardless, he has started on a high under Mikel Arteta and time will tell if it was a fluke performance. Nevertheless, Arsenal have started on the high and are coming off the back of two competition triumphs. Hopefully, a winners’ mentality has been instilled into the side. Let’s wait and see.

Chelsea! Frank Lampard has his work cut out for him

    chelsea

Chelsea started off their season with a 3:1 win away to Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex on Monday night. However. it was a night of mixed performances for both the new signings and the established players.

All eyes were on Kai Havertz in his first game having arrived at Stamford Bridge in less than a week. However, it was a debut he would want to forget in a hurry and solely focus on upcoming games. His attempted finesse pass which ended up at the linesman’s corner was the highlight of his game.

Meanwhile, fellow Germany international Timo Werner was full of life and pace and drew the foul for the penalty which resulted in the Blues’ opener by Jorginho from the spot. However, attention was turned to Kepa Arrizabalaga after conceding from long range via a shot he should have kept out.

With the impending arrival of Edouard Mendy from Rennes, the Spaniard didn’t do himself any good by conceding in that fashion. It remains to be seen who Frank Lampard sticks with although he openly defended the shot-stopper.

All thanks to unlikely scorers James Reece and Kurt Zouma. Regardless, Chelsea welcome Liverpool at Stamford Bridge in the next game, and all eyes will yet again be on the new boys.

We look forward to Matchday 2 as we’ll get to see Manchester United and Manchester City in action after playing no part on Matchday 1 due to their exertions in the Europa League. Matchday 2 should be fun and we wait to see if more penalties will be conceded.
