Koeman has been keen to impress on his players just how important it is for them to be intense, and that is how he wants his team to play. De Jong epitomised such intensity of Tuesday evening and it’s no surprise that the Blaugrana eased to a comfortable win.
Furthermore, the midfielder was also impressive in terms of his passing as he was the Barcelona player with the second highest number of attempted passes on the night. He recorded 78, but he was ever so slightly bettered by his midfield partner, Miralem Pjanic, who attempted 80 passes, though the Bosnian only had a 92 percent completion rate compared to the 94 percent of De Jong.
Koeman hasn’t been totally convinced with the depth he has at certain positions for the 2020/21 season, and the double-pivot in midfield realistically only has Sergio Busquets, De Jong and Pjanic as options.
Each player has a slightly different profile and bring different qualities to a starting XI, however De Jong’s intensity and willingness to run that was highlighted against Ferencvaros will do his stock no harm in the eyes of his fellow countryman.
