Ex-Premier League player joins Billericay for a second time

An ex-Premier League player joins National League South side Billericay Town as their new assistant manager to boss Jamie O’Hara.

The new number two had a stint with the Essex based non league club as a player in 2017 and is now eager to make an impact from the sidelines.

It is also reported that the 39-year-old will still be available to play ‘if needs be’ as they look to improve on last season’s finish of 17th place (PPG table).

Yes, that man is ex-Charlton, Fulham and Leicester left-back Paul Konchesky, who made a total of 23 appearances for Billericay, before going onto East Thurrock United in 2018.

“I’m really excited about it,” said Konchesky.

“I just wish the season would hurry up and get going now because I can’t wait for it to start.

“It’s a been long break for everyone but there are exciting times ahead now, both for myself and the club as well.

“I spoke to Jamie last year but it probably just wasn’t right.

“After the season finished he gave me another call and said the chance for me to come in as number two was still on the table.

“He told me to have a think about it so I did and it’s something I want to do.

“I’m pleased he’s given me the opportunity to come to a football club I already know well because I’ve played here before.”

Along with the job at Billericay, he will also continue his day to day role at West Ham United, another of his former clubs.

“I do the loans at West Ham really and look after the players who go out on loan,” said Konchesky.

“That’s more day to day and hopefully there could be a connection where we might be able to get some players to Billericay.”

Town were 18th in the National League South standings when last season was curtailed prematurely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Konchesky revealed his optimism for Billericay to finish much higher in the table next time around.

“It’s going to be a tough season but we will aim to be in the top half and once you do that you never know what could happen,” he added.

“First and foremost we need to win football matches but we will put the pressure on because we want to do well as coaches and as a squad.

“We have a new squad so it’s going to be a tough season.

“But I think being in the top half and pushing for the play-offs would be a fantastic season for us.”
