The surgery was a success, however whilst in hospital, he had a serious fall and was transferred to James Cook Hospital.

Sadly, he had suffered a fractured skull and a bleed of the brain.

Martin has since spent a number of days in hospital and thankfully has now been discharged,

Given the circumstances, the midfielder will be ruled out for a number of months but will make a full recovery.

The Club will issue further updates appropriately.

Smith’s professional journey began with Sunderland, but he also had a brief stint on loan with non league Gateshead in November 2015.

In March 2016, he signed for Carlisle United in a loan spell until the end of the 2015-16 season, making his professional debut in a draw against Wycombe Wanderers.

Later, on the 24th of June 2016, Smith made a move to Kilmarnock, signing with the Scottish Premiership outfit.

After spending a season there, he then joined Coleraine, a club in the NIFL Premiership, in July 2018.

His transfer to Swindon Town followed in July 2018, thanks to a recommendation from assistant manager Neil McDonald, who had been overseeing operations in Ireland during Smith’s time at Coleraine.

But, Smith’s stay at Swindon Town ended come the end of the 2018-19 season when he was released.

In July 2019, he embarked on a new chapter by joining Salford City on a two-year contract, and in November of the same year, he went on loan to Chorley until January 2020.

In January 2021, it was announced that Smith and Salford City had mutually agreed to part ways. and he shortly after signed with Chesterfield, in the National League.

In July 2021, he made a move to Hartlepool United, but that came to an end at the end of the 2021-22 season, as he was released by the club. During his time there, he made 15 appearances in various competitions.

Then came South Shields in June 2022, where he has stayed ever since playing 85 games and has 5 goals to his name.
