England fixtures threatened after 3 players test positive for coronavirus

The Three Lions’ doubleheader against Iceland and Denmark is in doubt after at least three of Gareth Southgate’s squad tested positive for coronavirus based on reports.

There has been an increase in the number of cases in the Premier League in recent times with the likes of Man United’s Paul Pogba and Tottenham Hotspur’s Tanguy Ndombele testing positive for the virus over the past 24 hours.

A report from Daily Mail has now suggested that the French players are not the only players affected with claims that three members of the England squad have tested positive. This development puts their upcoming fixtures against Iceland and Denmark in doubt and both games are set to take place in September.

The likes of Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham have already been quarantined after coming in contact with a person who tested positive. Therefore, the Three Lions squad will not gather at their St George’s Park base until Monday.

Regardless, when they eventually meet, they will be tested for the virus on arrival although it is widely expected that those who are currently infected will withdraw from the squad before then.

Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford may not take part in any action due to an ankle injury amid reports that he will withdraw from the squad although the severity of the issue is not on the high side.

This news is coming off the back of Harry Maguire’s removal from the 23-man team after being found guilty of aggravated assault and attempted bribery in Greece. He was subsequently hit with a 21 month and ten-day sentence which he plans to appeal.

England boss Southgate has not disclosed plans to call up any replacements. However, with the possibility of many absentees, he may have no choice but to call on some replacements. It remains to be seen if the games will hold. If they do, England will face Iceland in September before traveling to face Denmark.
