Chelsea risk getting stuck in expensive Europe-wide left-back shuffle this summer – Opinion

    So let’s get this straight.

Chelsea want a new left back – if you’ve been reading the back pages at all this season (or, in fact, watching Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri play) you’ll already know that.

Ben Chilwell is top of their list, but they may be forced into more creative solutions if Leicester demand the major cash that they did for Harry Maguire last summer.

Selling one or both of Emerson and Alonso is surely a priority, given having 3 first team left-backs on the books is hardly financially prudent. Sending one of them to play with Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan would seem sensible, but according to Mundo Deportivo today, the Blues turned down offers for both from the Italian club.

That has lead to Inter Milan asking for Barcelona left back Junior Firpo as part of the deal for Lautaro Martinez.

But if Firpo goes, that means that Barca will suddenly need a left back, and in Nico Tagliafico MD’s list has at least one player who we know the Blues to be interested in. The other alternatives – Juan Bernat, Raphael Guerreiro, Pervis Estinpnan and so on, will also be on the list of players in that position Chelsea are looking at.

    Are you following?

So ultimately, by turning down Inter’s interest in the left backs that they don’t even want, the Blues may have accidentally created a left-back vortex across the continent that’s going to lead to more competition – and therefore higher prices – for whoever they end up bringing in.

Maybe that Chilwell deal isn’t looking to unattractive after all.
