Chelsea push for nine subs when Project Restart resumes

Chelsea are pushing for the number of substitutes in games to be increased to nine for the remainder of the 2019/20 Premier League season according to reports.

Premier League action is set to return on June 17, making it more than three months of no action due to the COVID-19 pandemic which resulted in the suspension of the round leather game.

The Premier League’s Project Restart was approved last week and various reports now suggest that the Stamford Bridge outfit are pushing for an increase in the size of the matchday squad from 18 players to 20.

This will allow two more players to sit on the bench, thereby increasing the manager’s substitute options.

It is believed that the Premier League were already preparing to discuss allowing five players to be introduced in a game against the normal three, and will now vote on Chelsea’s proposal.

Chelsea appear to be concerned with the effects of the long pause of the competitive game on players, coupled with fitting nine Premier League games and further three FA Cup games into a seven-week schedule.

Meanwhile, Frank Lampard’s men who sit third in the Premier League must be prepared to fight to the wire for a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League as they are closely pursued by Manchester United on fourth who they lead with just three points.

Other top 4 contenders in the chasing pack are Wolves, Sheffield United surprisingly, Arsenal, and Tottenham Hotspur.

The newly-promoted side currently have 43 points against Chelsea’s 48 points and have a game in hand. They currently sit 7th on the log. Arsenal are 9th on the log with 40 points and also have a game in hand.

This should be an interesting seven weeks of Premier League action as fight for the top four places will be very fierce for all teams involved. Even Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City in third place must watch their backs.
