Ruben Loftus-Cheek has, of course, endured a rough couple of seasons, largely due to injuries and a lack of regular football at Chelsea.
After returning from a loan spell at Crystal Palace in 2018, though, things did appear to be looking up for the midfielder.
Maurizio Sarri was at the helm at Stamford Bridge at the time, and the Italian handed RLC plenty of game-time, especially in Europe.
However, towards the back end of the term, Loftus-Cheek suffered yet another injury, which subsequently ruled him out for not only the remainder of that campaign, but also most 2019/20 too.
Then, after appearing in a solitary league game at the start of 2020/21 under Frank Lampard, the midfielder was shipped off on loan to Fulham.
Loftus-Cheek would go on to score one goal in 31 outings for the now Championship outfit.
Loftus-Cheek promises to hit ground running
Such a return suggested that RLC’s stint at Stamford Bridge would likely be up this summer given the insane amount of competition at Chelsea right now.
But with just under two weeks till the campaign starts, Loftus-Cheek is still on Chelsea’s books with little talk of a potential move.
Loftus-Cheek also seems pretty confident ahead of the new campaign, stating that this is the season where he hits the ground running:
‘I had last season as a season where I can find my feet and it definitely felt like that at the start.
‘I was struggling mentally and needed to focus on just taking risks in training and get that feel back, but it eventually came and I was doing really well in games, so I’ve had my injury and I’ve had a season now to get fit and feel confident in my body and this season is where I hit the ground running.’
The Englishman also had this to say on his fitness:
‘I feel really fit now and strong, and hopefully the injuries stay away.
‘Last season was my first full injury-free season which is a massive positive for me, because I always used to get niggles.
‘Even though I was fit I’d be out for a week or a couple of days, miss a couple of matches, but last season was good for my body to be fit every training session and available for every game.’
