Champions League regulars determined to appoint ex-Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino – report –

Benfica want to appoint Mauricio Pochettino and are prepared to break the bank to secure the services of the former Tottenham manager, according to reports in Portugal.

Pochettino has been out of work since Spurs sacked him in November last year after a difficult start to the season. Heavy defeats to Bayern Munich and Brighton spelled the beginning of the end for the Argentine, who was replaced by Jose Mourinho.

There has been plenty of anxious chatter among Tottenham fans about where the much-admired ex-manager – who led the Londoners to an unexpected Champions League final last season – will end up next.

And according to Portuguese outlet Record, Pochettino could be coaching in the Primeira Liga next term.

Their story – as relayed by the Daily Mail – claims Benfica are determined to replace current boss Bruno Lage with Pochettino ahead of the 2020/21 campaign. And it is believed the Champions League regulars are prepared to pay the 48-year-old big money to make the move to Portugal.

In some ways this a good thing for the Spurs supporters who have been worried about facing Pochettino as the manager of another English club, though they could of course cross paths in European competition in the future.
