Celtic make an approach for a different manager according to reports whose win ratio is better than that of Chelsea’s Thomas Tuchel.
The ever reliable Footy Insider state that the Scottish Premiership giants are assessing ex-Borussia Dortmund manager Lucien Favre, who is keen, as an alternative manager option in case Eddie Howe rejects their offer.
The Glasgow giants are said to be waiting on Howe to formally commit to the job after he reportedly reached a verbal agreement last week to become their next manager following talks in London.
Sky Sports however confirm that Howe is not close to joining any team and won’t be until at least until this summer.
That then leaves Celtic weighing up potential alternatives after Howe had apparently verbally agreed to become the next Celtic manager, and the hope had been that he will have the deal signed, sealed and delivered this week but could potentially not start until the summer.
Howe apparently asked for Bournemouth technical director Hughes to be brought in as director of football, and that has caused talks to become ‘complicated’.
63 year old ex-Dortmund boss Favre is now on their manager shortlist and considered a real contender if Howe doesn’t want the job.
He has been out of work since being dismissed by the Bundesliga club in December but has an impressive track record after managing top-flight teams in Germany, France and his native Switzerland.
Among his managerial honours unclide two league titles in Switzerland with Zurich.
Favre had a two-and-a-half year spell at Dortmund, where he boasts having an impressive 62% win record, as well as four years at Borussia Mochengladbach and two years at French outfit Nice.
HIS MANAGERIAL RECORD:
Servette – 1 July 2000 until 30 June 2002 – 83 games, 34 wins, 26 draws, 23 defeats, 40.96 win %
Zürich – 1 July 2003 until 1 June 2007 – 169 games, 94 draws, 33 defeats, 42 55.62 win %
Hertha BSC – 1 June 2007 until 28 September 2009 – 94 games, 40 wins, 20 draws, 34 defeats, 42.55 win %
Borussia Mönchengladbach – 14 February 2011 until 20 September 2015 – 189 games, 88 wins, 49 draws, 52 defeats, 46.56 win %
Nice – 24 May 2016 until 20 May 2018 – 99 games, 42 wins, 24 draws, 33 defeats, 42.42 win %
Borussia Dortmund – 22 May 2018 until 13 December 2020 – 110 games, 68 wins, 18 draws, 24 defeats, 61.82 win %
Total – 744 games, 366 wins, 170 draws, 208 defeats, 49.19 win %
Derek Rae – the Scotsman who is the Bundesliga’s lead commentator at ESPN – has offered his view on the speculation. He says: –
1/ Whether or not this ends up happening, it makes more sense than some of the younger, rising star coaching names like Marsch & Seoane who are outwith Celtic‘s reach. Favre is in the autumn of his career & doesn’t have an English language stop on his CV.
2/ A few things about Favre: – Quiet, likeable but at BVB, personality seemed not to match the passionate & emotional nature of the club. – Football is possession based with a lot of passing, sometimes overdone if anything – People I know at BVB, raved about his training
3/ – Favre is someone who likes working & coaching. Not ready to retire into the shadows – Oft criticised (unfairly in my view) for falling short against Bayern. Oft overlooked is his points average which is the best of any BVB coach (better even than Klopp.)
4/ Worth bearing in mind, he’s a coach not a British style manager. At least that has been Favre until now. In Dortmund he had Michael Zorc & co. looking after the sporting side of things. In Gladbach, Max Eberl.
5/ So it still comes back to some of the points I raised the other week. Celtic need a fully fledged sporting structure in place. Then they can begin identifying & attracting coaches on the way up & maybe people like Favre. One all powerful manager will only get you so far.
