Breakthrough reached as Man Utd tempt Roma with decisive Smalling offer

Roma have made a significant breakthrough in their attempts to sign Chris Smalling from Manchester United, according to a report.

Smalling moved to the Serie A on loan last summer after Harry Maguire’s arrival restricted his game time at United.

The defender has enjoyed his time in Italy and several reports have said he wants to stay.

However, up to this point, the sticking point for cash-strapped Roma has been United’s valuation of Smalling.

The Red Devils are reportedly demanding upwards of £20million for the player, although Corriere dello Sport claims an agreement is now “one step away”.

Roma are keen to accept United’s offer of another loan deal worth €3million (£2.7million) including an obligation to buy at the end of next term.

Roma’s obligation to buy – which could cost €15million – could be a risk, with the club posting over €200million in debt.

What’s more, with Smalling approaching the age of 32, there is little chance of recuperating that sum from his sale.

However, the report says Roma head coach Paulo Fonseca will be happy to tie down the player, who has become a vital member of his side this season.

Indeed, Smalling is unlikely to receive more game time if he returned to United.

Victor Lindelof has become Maguire’s favoured partner and Eric Bailly is returning to fitness after knee surgery.

MAN UTD TO GO AFTER ANSU FATI?

Reports in the latest Euro Paper Talk claimed that Barcelona winger Ansu Fati is a target for United.

The 17-year-old winger has made a big impression during his breakthrough season in Barca’s first team, scoring five goals and providing one assist in 24 appearances.

Reports have said he is an alternative target to Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho.
