After some fans have complained about Ana de Armas accent when portraying American icon Marilyn Monroe in the trailer of Netflix’s new movie “Blonde”, Academy Award winning actor Brad Pitt has jumped to defend de Armas and characterized her performance as phenomenal.
Pitt is a producer for the film with his company Plan B Entertainment.
“That’s a tough dress to fill. It was 10 years in the making. It wasn’t until we found Ana that we could get it across the finish line.”, he told Entertainment Tonight.
Blonde, the movie about Marilyn Monroe’s life
“Blonde” is based of the novel written by Joyce Carol Oates, and de Armas shares credits with Adrien Brody, Bobby Cannavale, Julianne Nicholson, Xavier Samuel and Evan Williams.
Ana de Armas assures she did a lot of research for this role, including reading Joyce’s novel and studying hundreds of pictures, videos, audio recordings, movies and everything she could get her hands on.
“We worked on this film for hours, every single day for almost a year”, de Armas told Netflix Queue a couple of months ago.
Marilyn Monroe’s family approves Ana de Armas portrayal of the sex symbol
Despite the outside noise and criticism by some of the fans, the family members and estate of the late Marilyn Monroe find Ana de Armas performance great.
“Any actor that steps into that role knows they have big shoes to fill. Based on the trailer alone, it looks like Ana was a great casting choice as she captures Marilyn’s glamour, humanity and vulnerability. We can’t wait to see the film in its entirety!”, were the words of Marc Rosen, the president of entertainment at Authentic Brands Group (ABG), which owns the Marilyn Monroe Estate.
The president and CMO of ABG also praised Ana de Arma’s role as Marilyn Monroe, saying she artfully captured the essence of her voice.
“Marilyn was known for her breathiness, which was actually a tactic taught to her by a speech therapist during her childhood to help her overcome a stutter.”, he added.
