Barcelona vs Atletico Benched in last two games
Antoine Griezmann was Barcelona‘s standout signing from last summer and one of the biggest in their history because of his price, his quality and his potential.
The French international is the third member of the Blaugrana’s attacking trident alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.
However, in recent weeks, his contributions during games have dropped considerably and, despite Quique Setien calling him ‘indisputable’ before Barcelona’s win against Leganes, he’s fallen out of the coach’s plans.
Griezmann has made 38 appearances in total for Barcelona this season, with 31 of them coming in LaLiga Santander.
The only LaLiga Santander fixture he has missed so far this campaign came against Sevilla at the Camp Nou on Matchday 8 when he watched the game from the bench.
Before the break in the season, the forward had only started on the bench in LaLiga Santander in that clash with Sevilla and another one with Real Valladolid.
That trend continued when the season resumed in June as the former Atletico Madrid man started both of Barcelona‘s first two games back.
Before the second one against Leganes at the Camp Nou, Setien nailed his colours to the mast.
“He’s an indisputable player,” Setien said about Griezmann.
“He’s played practically every game since I’ve been here.
“Griezmann is a great player, we’ll keep counting on him and he’ll keep playing a key part because he’s tremendously important for this team and this club.”
He may have been an important player for both Ernesto Valverde and Setien, but he’s not anymore.
Of Barcelona‘s first five games back after the break, Griezmann has started three and completed 90 minutes in just one – the visit of Leganes.
He was substituted against Real Mallorca and Athletic Club and started on the bench against Sevilla and Celta Vigo.
Griezmann has been a victim of Setien‘s rotation policy, with Martin Braithwaite and Ansu Fati getting starts in attack as well.
“Only 11 can play,” Setien said after Griezmann was limited to a substitute’s role at Balaidos.
“I know there are players with a certain reputation, but everyone can play and everyone can not.”
Griezmann could return to Setien‘s starting line-up for the visit of his former club Atletico on Tuesday night, but his role under the current Blaugrana boss is diminishing.
