Barcelona He’ll officiate Barcelona vs Athletic
Barcelona aren’t overly impressed by refereeing decisions that they believe have gone in favour of Real Madrid in recent weeks and Gerard Pique is among those who hasn’t hidden his frustration.
On Friday night he insinuated that referees were favouring Real Madrid, before Los Blancos were involved in a VAR-heavy win over Real Sociedad on Sunday.
Now, on Tuesday, Jesus Gil Manzano will referee Barcelona‘s clash with Athletic Club and this will bring up tense memories.
It was Gil Manzano who was at the centre of attention during Barcelona‘s own visit to Real Sociedad this season, which ended in a 2-2 draw and a formal letter of complaint to the president of the Spanish football federation, Luis Rubiales, about the decision not to consult VAR.
Pique was pulled down and VAR was not checked in an incident similar to one which saw a penalty awarded to La Real earlier on in the game when Sergio Busquets had done similar.
Javier Alberola Rojas was the referee on the field, but Gil Manzano was in the VAR room and took the brunt of the complaints.
“It’s an incident for VAR, they had to check it,” Busquets said at the time.
“That is clearer than mine, it’s difficult to know why they act like this.”
It wasn’t the first time Gil Manzano clashed with Barcelona as Pique had a heated discussion with him in 2018/19 after he sent off Clement Lenglet against Girona in the first half.
“History speaks for itself,” Pique told the official in the tunnel at half time.
Pique had previously criticised Gil Manzano before then as he complained on Twitter in 2017 about his decisions in a 3-2 win for Real Madrid against Villarreal when the visitors came from behind to win with a controversial penalty.
Gil Manzano has refereed Barcelona 23 times, with 15 wins for the Catalan side, five draws, three defeats and six red cards.
