Atletico Madrid Nearing the end of playing career
Atletico Madrid have been forced to reshuffle their coaching staff ahead of the 2020/21 season with assistant coach, German Burgos, having officially announced his departure to start his own head coaching career, yet with Gabi returning to take his place there could be a further move in that direction with Juanfran.
The Spanish right-back was a diligent servant to the club during his time with Los Colchoneros, helping them to two Champions League finals and a LaLiga Santander title, and he now realises his playing career is coming to a close.
“I want to be the sporting director at Atletico Madrid, and I know who I want my coach to be,” Juanfran detailed in an interview with MARCA in November 2019.
Juanfran‘s contract with Sao Paulo ends in December and there is a belief that he could return to the Spanish capital, especially given his fantastic relationship with Atleti CEO, Miguel Angel Gil Marin.
At the present time, Andrea Berta holds the role of sporting director and is well regarded within the club for his work over the years, yet there is infinite goodwill towards the former Spanish international at the club.
Gabi has already been announced as an individual who will return to the club in a coaching capacity next term, and he was teammates with Juanfran for many years.
In the immediate future though, Atleti are merely focusing on matters on the pitch with LaLiga Santander set to resume on Thursday.
They also have their Champions League campaign to think about at the same time, but the idea is clear for Juanfran to return to the club he loves in some capacity or another.
