Atlanta United, Lisandro Lopez agree to part ways

Atlanta United announced on Tuesday that it has come to an agreement with veteran forward Lisandro Lopez to terminate his contract with the club. This news comes on the heels of the tragic passing of Lopez’s father a few weeks ago.

The 38-year-old left the team to return home to Argentina following the death of his father and is reportedly contemplating retirement. The club and player have come to this agreement to free up Lopez to make the best decision for his future, whether that’s to call it a career or perhaps play closer to his family.

“It’s with a heavy heart that we announce Lisandro’s time at the club has come to an end,” Atlanta United Vice President and Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra said. “Despite our short time together, he quickly proved to be a valuable team-first member of our organization and he will always be welcome back at Atlanta United. Our thoughts will continue to be with Lisandro and his family.”

Lopez joined the Five Stripes this winter on a free transfer from Racing Club and appeared just four times for the club before this turn of events caused a major change in plans.

We wish Lisandro nothing but the best in whatever path he decides to take from here on out. Good luck, Licha.
