Arsenal remain the favourites to land Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey this summer, according to reports in Spain.
A report on Monday in Spain claimed that Arsenal ‘will pay the clause’ to bring Partey to the Emirates Stadium with a deal ‘close’ after the Gunners had been previously linked with the 27-year-old.
The Gunners’ engine room is considered an area of relative weakness, with Granit Xhaka and Lucas Torreira often failing to provide adequate cover for a vulnerable defence.
David Ornstein wrote in The Athletic on Wednesday that Arsenal ‘have intensified their interest in signing’ Partey and ‘will be hopeful of negotiating a lower figure’ than his €50m (£45.6m) release clause.
And now Spanish publication AS (via Sport Witness) claims that Atletico Madrid are weighing up whether to use Partey in a deal to sign Napoli striker Arkadiusz Milik, with the Serie A club interested in the midfielder.
However, AS reckons Arsenal are still the ‘best placed’ side to land Partey as their wage offer would be three times the amount he currently earns at Atletico, with Napoli unlikely to match that kind of salary.
