Arsenal ready to compete with Man Utd for ‘the second Kai Havertz’

Arsenal & Man United linked with Wirtz

A recent report stemming from Italy has credited both Arsenal and Manchester United with an interest in Florian Wirtz.

As per, citing Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb, Arsenal are ready to compete with Man United for the signing of Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz.

They add that it is thought that Wirtz could cost between €40-50m.

    Who is Florian Wirtz?

Who, though, is Florian Wirtz, and why is he reportedly commanding such a high potential transfer fee despite being only 18 years of age?

Though Wirtz is still a teenager, he has already firmly cemented himself in Bayer Leverkusen’s senior side.

Wirtz joined the club from FC Koln’s youth ranks back in January of 2020 and he has become an instant success.

Wirtz is a central attacking midfielder by trade, but he can also play on the left-wing.

And, during his time with Leverkusen, he has now scored 13 goals and provided 12 assists in 52 outings.

Said numbers and the fact he is generally used as a CAM, but can also play out wide, may lead some to draw comparisons with Kai Havertz, who Wirtz has now effectively replaced since he joined Chelsea.

And, it is easy to see why Wirtz is being compared to Havertz. When he scored in a 4-2 loss vs Bayern Munich, Wirtz would overtake Havertz as Leverkusen’s youngest goalscorer at just 17 years and 34 days old.

Germany legend Lothar Matthaus has also tipped Wirtz to be the second Kai Havertz:

“He will be the second Kai Havertz… He will go the same way as Havertz. In a few years, we will see him play for the German national team and we’ll see him play for a big, big team in Europe.”

At the time of the prediction, Matthaus also said that Wirtz would end up playing for the German national team. And that prediction has now come to pass, with the youngster debuting in September of 2021, making three appearances in total so far.
