Premier League outfit are waiting for Lille defender Gabriel Magalhaes’ decision after making an offer for him. The 22-year-old is one of the sought-after players this summer and reports are rife that the Gunners have made an official approach to sign the Brazil Under-20 international.
Magalhaes has also been linked with a move to the likes of Napoli and Manchester United as he prepares to leave Lille after playing 28 games in the 2019/20 Ligue 1 season which was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The player’s final destination will be known soon as we wait to see if he will follow the footsteps of Nicolas Pepe who joined Arsenal from Lille in a club-record transfer last summer. Lille’s president recently confirmed that the defender is expected to leave.
“He is one of the players that we allowed to exit the club this summer, he asked for it and wants to try something else,” Lopez told Sky Sports.
“We clearly told him what our expectations were, we spoke to a number of clubs, our expectations were met by a number of clubs and we have given him the time to decide.
“It is going to be entirely his decision. We tend to try and steer our players in certain directions, but at the end of the day it’s the player’s decision.
“I know he is going to make a decision early next week.”
Mikel Arteta is keen to boost his defense especially as that department of the team was hit with many injuries towards the end of the 2019/20 season.
The Spaniard now has many options at his disposal as William Saliba has linked up with the first team after a loan spell at St Etienne. He can also rely on the likes of David Luiz, Calum Chambers, Shkodran Mustafi, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, and Pablo Mari.
Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu have prioritized the acquisition of a defender as well as the contract renewal of Pierre-Emerick Abameyang. The 3i-year-old will see his current deal expire next summer although it is believed that he has reached an agreement with the club on an extension which will be announced later this week.
