5:2 defeat could be a one off, as Mount impresses against Porto

Chelsea put the 5:2 bashing by West Brom in the Premier League behind them as they ran out 2 nil winners against FC Porto in the first leg of their UCL quarterfinal encounter at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán in Seville.

The Blues were heavy favorites for a win after the draws were made but doubts came up after the defeat to West Brom.

However, the Blues went into the game with the intent of clearing those doubts and did it, thanks to goals by Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell.

They’ll now go into the second leg which puts them technically at home at the same venue with a 2 goal lead. Day 2 of the quarterfinal fixtures was the day for the away sides to shine as Paris Saint-Germain also beat Bayern Munich 3:2 at the Allianz Arena.

The Blues made a nervy start but grew into the game. Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel was impressed with his side and described Mason Mount’s goal in the game as a big step in his blossoming career.

Mount opened the scoring on the night after an exquisite turn and a shot in the first half before Chilwell added the second in the second half of the game.

There were doubts over Mount’s footballing prowess under Frank Lampard as there were thoughts that he was being favored by the Chelsea legend having played under him at Derby County in the Championship.

However, since Lampard’s dismissal and appointment of Tuchel, the Englishman has remained a key player and continued to impress, establishing himself as a mainstay in the team under the German tactician.

Mason Mount has scored 5 goals in all competitions since Thomas Tuchel became Blues boss, and this is more than any player in the side. Speaking to reporters after the game, Tuchel said:

“The finish was clinical from Mason,” “He has the quality to do this and to do it in a quarter-final is a big step for him.

“He has the right attitude towards success. He is open and hungry to learn.”

The goal also established Mount as Chelsea’s youngest goalscorer in a Champions League knockout game at 22 years and 87 days old.

“Mason is a key player for us and I am happy he fits into this role at a young age,” Tuchel added.
